Top-Flight Headlines: Mejbri Suspended for Spitting; Guardiola Says 'Back Line Must Improve'

In the latest Premier League developments, a notable midfielder was issued a significant suspension, a head coach has pointed to a player's mistakes to prove a point, and Pep Guardiola has called for backline improvements after a wild victory.

Mejbri Handed Four-Game Ban and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been handed a four-match ban and a financial penalty following misconduct during a recent match versus Leeds United. The governing body stated the player faced a separate regulatory commission following allegations of spitting in the direction of visiting supporters at the 67-minute point of a 2-0 win for Burnley.

An FA release read: “An independent disciplinary panel has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for misconduct during the Premier League match with Leeds on 18 October. The charge was that he behaved in breach of the rules of the game or in a poor manner by engaging in offensive and indecent behaviour by spitting towards the area of Leeds United supporters.”

The statement continued, “Mejbri subsequently accepted the charge, with the Regulatory Commission handing down a four-game suspension and £15,000 after a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for the sanction are to be released at a later date.” Burnley, currently in 19th place in the standings, travel to 12th-place Newcastle on Saturday.

2. Maresca Points to Adarabioyo's Mistakes to Make an Argument

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of experience is no an issue for his team, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's age did not stop him from playing a bad game in the defeat against Leeds United.

Maresca, who manages the youngest squad in the Premier League, does not feel that inexperience was a factor in their setback. He made his argument by criticising Tosin, Chelsea's oldest player on the pitch, after he produced an error-strewn performance at the back.

“We always talk about a lack of experience after we fail to win,” Maresca said. “When we beat Barcelona, the draw against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced personnel. I understand that if we don’t win, we are always searching for an explanation, but in my view why we didn’t win against Leeds is not because of inexperience, it’s because we just weren't good enough.”

Maresca continued, “Who was the most senior player on our team in the match? It was Tosin. Was he good? So, it isn't related to his age. It's that those 11 players, they were not up to standard.”

Guardiola Insists Defensive Solidity 'Must Improve'

Pep Guardiola has stated the champions have taken lessons from their recent scare at Fulham with the episode is now forgotten. The team survived to claim a 5-4 victory in a remarkable clash at Craven Cottage, having led 5-1 with about an hour played.

This followed they fought off a fightback to win 3-2 in their previous game, it raised further doubts regarding whether they are resilient required to sustain a challenge against pace-setters Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” Guardiola commented. “Valuable lessons, hopefully. At this level, for every team, one must take onboard what happens in the good things and results and think of the next one.”

“Of course I’m concerned,” Guardiola added. “We are trying to analyse the cause, so as not to allow the goals. After conceding three by Leeds, and the five goals by Fulham it shows our sides, correct? Therefore, always done plenty of positive things. But the number of attempts had Leeds ? Three? They scored two. That ratio is good. And shots on target for Fulham ? Five, six? So, the average of chances conceded we can see is high. We have to be better.”

Newcastle Prioritise New Livramento and Botman Deals

Newcastle United's recently appointed sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed new deal negotiations involving important defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his to-do list for the club. Wilson joined after leaving Nottingham Forest in October and was reassured to learn midfielder Sandro Tonali is on a deal that runs to 2029 and, potentially, 2030.

This allows Wilson to focus on negotiations for Livramento and Botman's representatives. With the former’s agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's a year later, the club's efforts have assumed a certain importance.

“My first few days after starting was when I found that Sandro’s contract situation is significantly better than I was expecting,” said Wilson. “However, it is well known that the club wishes to renew Tino’s deal and also would want to extend Sven Botman’s as well. Those discussions are ongoing.”

Head coach Eddie Howe will be without Botman against the match against Burnley this Saturday, and he likely to be out for at least a further period.

5. Nuno Confirms Paquetá Will Start for West Ham

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espírito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paquetá will return to start when the side play Brighton on Sunday, after serving his suspension for the sending-off against Liverpool.

“It is in the past,” the manager remarked. “I am confident it will not be repeated because he personally admitted the error. We discussed it about it internally. I am positive it is over and will not happen again.”

Nuno also understands the intense strain facing his team, currently in the relegation zone ahead of Saturday's matches. “We can't ignore it,” he said. “It's the situation. We have to face it. We're fighting for survival. We can't hide it.”

6. Arteta Impressed by Striker Stand-in Merino

Mikel Merino could continue leading the line for Arsenal central striker despite their regular strikers return from injury. Merino has been playing as a makeshift number nine because of fitness issues for Viktor Gyokeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

He scored the opener versus Brentford and set up Bukayo Saka for their second goal during a 2-0 victory which preserved {their|
