{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences dangerous incident with Formula 1 marshals
Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's F1 event in Mexico when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him
The alarming incident took place on the third circuit when safety workers were seen on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Shortly afterward, Racing Bulls driver Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Could you believe what happened? I could have... killed them"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I approached Turn One and there were just two guys dashing across the track"
"I came close to striking one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Clearly there's been a failure in communication somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just sprint across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the FIA, is actively examining the events
"After an occurrence at turn one, race control was informed that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the FIA
"On lap three, track officials were informed and placed on standby to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once all cars had passed"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy personnel were withdrawn and a double yellow flag was displayed in that section"
"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
