Citizens of Israel Come together to Commemorate The Second Anniversary Since The October 7 Militant Onset

On Tuesday, Israelis will gather in various locations to mark the second anniversary of the 7 October attack, during which fighters affiliated with Hamas caused the deaths of around 1,200 persons and seized 251 captives through an offensive against Israel's southern areas.

Informal Commemorations and Rallies

Community memorials are scheduled in the small kibbutzim of Israel's south in which individuals were lost or abducted, and a sizeable public gathering will occur in the city of Tel Aviv to call for the release of the remaining hostages from confinement under Hamas in Gaza.

The national commemorative service of honoring will be held on October 16 in Israel’s national cemetery on Herzl Mountain after the religious festival of the Rejoicing of the Torah.

Collective Trauma and Continuing Effects

The remembrance of the collective trauma of the attack two years ago – the worst singular offensive in the history of Israel – remains profoundly felt throughout the nation. The photographs of those abducted remaining in custody in Gaza are displayed at bus stops across the land, and homes that were torched by fighters as they raided communal settlements are left scorched and vacant.

Numerous individuals who endured the incident during the Nova musical event participated in a remembrance on Sunday with ex-captives and the relatives of those lost.

“This angel might have celebrated 27 years old now. The recollection stays with me as if it were very recently,” Ofir Dor, the father of the young Idan perished at the festival, said beneath a monument showing photographs of those killed.

Ceasefire Hopes

The anniversary has been overshadowed by expectations that the war in Gaza may finally be nearing its end. Negotiators from Hamas and Israel met in the Arab Republic on recent Monday where they started mediated discussions to resolve the particulars of the freeing of each abducted individual detained in the strip and the release of nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, as well as the initial withdrawal of Israel's military forces from the Gaza Strip.

This set of talks, although distant from a resolution, has generated more enthusiasm than any peace efforts since the previous cessation of hostilities broke down in the middle of March.

Benjamin Netanyahu has said he expects to reveal the freeing of captives “in the coming days”, while the former president has threatened Hamas with “utter annihilation” in case the arrangement fails to materialize.

Civilian Demands

Some commemoration events have been repurposed to protests to demand the administration to reach a deal to return the captives and conclude the conflict. At a rally in the public space for captives in the metropolitan area on Saturday night, families called for the leader accept the suggested framework to end the war in Gaza.

Situation in Gaza

Within the strip, residents are anxiously awaiting to see if an armistice materialises. Regardless of Trump’s demands that the military cease attacks on the area in anticipation of a captive return, strikes on the strip persist. The strip's medical administration said no fewer than 19 individuals were died from Israeli strikes over the last 24 hours, comprising two people seeking aid.

Tuesday will also mark the two-year point of the start of the nation's armed offensive on the Palestinian territory, which has brought physical and personal devastation to the residents.

More than 67,000 Palestinians have been died and about 170,000 have been injured by the nation's military in the territory, per the strip's medical office. No fewer than 460 people have died from starvation in the strip, and the world’s leading authority on food crises has declared a famine is occurring in parts of the strip – a result of what most aid agencies say is an Israeli blockade on Gaza. The Israeli government has disputed the assertion.

A UN commission of inquiry, multiple organizations focused on rights and the global leading organization of genocide scholars have said Israel has performed acts of genocide in the strip over the past two years. The nation's leadership has rejected the charge and asserted its actions constitute defensive measures.
