Adolescent Found Deceased Following False Accusations of Stealing Ashes
A 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days following being falsely blamed of taking the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his body in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his parent received a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The message stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a allegation which was untrue.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from police later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "lied to police" and "it now appears that the property was never stolen in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken ashes attracted social media comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she said.
Emotional Health Impact
She added that Kai had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"It would have hurt him deeply," she commented, "especially when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was taken to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the moment of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like days".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her son told her he had entered the residence because the woman who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he needed, but denied taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the accusations.
The inquest learned that a young adult urged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he died, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, affectionate" boy, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his worries", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The hearing received testimony from school personnel at the local secondary school.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the first I heard".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the educator said she called Kai's family telephone and provided a voicemail saying she had communicated to Kai about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they never got that message.
Official Finding
Senior coroner told the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future deaths report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old child.
"Probably falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On 11 November, he was questioned by the police and after his interview he was freed while investigations continued."
The official concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or omissions of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his purpose."
